Blackbird 03:09
BLACKBIRD I see a blackbird comin’ for me He’s hiding high up in that old oak tree He don’t know I got the fight in me Come on Come on Come on Come on You keep tryin’ But I’m not buyin’ If that crow comes circling ‘round I’ll be the first one to take him down He don’t know I got the fight in me Come on Come on Come on Come on You keep tryin’ But I’m not buyin’ When I’m layin’ on the red dirt ground Don’t think you can come and take me down I ain’t got white flags flying around Come on Come on Come on Come on You keep callin’ But I’m not buying I’m hiding high up in that old oak tree I’ll take you down before you see me She don’t know I got the fight in me Come on Come on Come on Come on When that crow comes circling ‘round I’ll be the first one to take him down He don’t know I got the fight in me Come on Come on Come on Come on You keep callin’ But I’m not buying You keep calling you keep calling you keep calling you keep Get up get up get up get up

Great Mother 03:28
GREAT MOTHER Fire in the canyon Ashes rainin’ down Prayin’ for water To save this little town Oh Great Mother Always around Oh Great Mother Wears the only crown Mercy on your children They should know by now Cure and the poison Circle of the Tao Oh Great Mother Always around Oh Great Mother Wears the only crown Cry from the heavens Rivers flowin’ now Taking and giving Kneeling on the ground Oh Great Mother Always around Oh Great Mother Wears the only crown

THE NORTH FORK Drivin’ I-80 From the Bay to Big Blue Searching for a stranger I once knew Her roots ran deep In the oaks that line the river Where the North and South Fork meet I found her there In the warm California air There she goes Runnin’ in the hills of gold Hello soul I missed you You’ve been hiding in Sutter County all this time San Francisco Bay I sure enjoyed my stay But my heart lies here in this river town of mine Headin’ down Bidwell A road leading right back to me Talkin’ to a girl I once knew She’s in bare feet In the cool American River Where the North and South Fork meet I found her there Running like she was ten There she goes It’s nice to meet you again Hello soul I missed you You’ve been hiding in Sutter County all this time San Francisco Bay I sure enjoyed my stay But my heart lies in this little river town of mine My heart lies here

Sinners 03:42
SINNERS Sitting in the corner Words on your shirt Your boots are all shined up Like you just came from church Think you’re walking on water But you ain’t read the word You got somethin’ on your shoulder And it’s gettin’ all the girls They’re gonna catch us it’s a matter of time You better go now They’re gonna catch us it’s a matter of time You better go now They’re gonna catch us it’s a matter of time You better go now They’re gonna catch is it’s a matter of time You better go now go now go now Wait a minute You kissed my neck ’til it burned right through Now my old man’s back I’m thinkin’ of you Dug your claws in and won’t let go Now you’re standing in the doorway It’s the middle of the night Dragging all your dirt in Whole thing ain’t right They’re gonna catch us it’s a matter of time You better go now They’re gonna catch us it’s a matter of time You better go now go now Wait a minute They’re gonna catch us it’s a matter of time You better go now They’re gonna catch is it’s a matter of time You better go now go now go now Wait a minute Kiss my neck ’til it burned right through Now my old man’s back and I’m thinking of you Kiss my neck and it burned right through Kiss my neck and it burned right through Kiss my neck and it burned right through Now my old man’s back and I’m thinkin’ of you

CHIPPIN' AWAY She kicked me out said I’m on my own Quit the drink or you ain’t comin’ home Now it’s me and Jim on the side of the road My mama told daddy the same damn thing And my old man he lost everything Oooh it’s gonna be a long walk home But I’m chippin’ away yeah I’m chippin’ away I’m chippin’ away at my 30 days I threw everything down the kitchen sink Swore baby you were my last drink I’m chippin I’m a chippin I’m chippin’ away No more vodka in my coffee cup I got a smokers cough but I’m showing up All the steps to face my regrets I told the devil on my shoulder he got nothing on you I’m gonna do what the good book do Oooh it’s gonna be a long, long walk home But I’m chippin’ away yeah I’m chippin’ away I’m chippin’ away at my 60 days I threw everything down the kitchen sink Swore baby you were my last drink Now I’m chippin I’m chippin’ I’m chippin’ away Chippin’ away yeah I’m chippin’ away I’m chippin’ away at my 90 days I threw everything down the kitchen sink Swore baby you were my last drink Now I’m chippin I’m chippin I’m chippin’ away

Salton Sea 04:16
SALTON SEA Daddy just died And my lover left me for Dallas Wallet’s gone dry And baby I got a habit Heart’s as dead as the Salton Sea Packed my bags for nowhere That’s where I found you Playing some bottom feeder dive Two hundred and thirty five You’re a tall drink of water I got a lot of eyes staring at me Just one sip and I’ll go under I’m gonna drown myself In the Salton Sea 235 feet below Grey at the edges And the water don’t flow Turn to the right Follow the crow You’re a tall drink of water I got a lot of eyes staring at me Just one sip and I’ll go under I’m gonna drown myself In the Salton Sea

Convention 03:35
CONVENTION We started out with good intentions You were face down in convention And now I know You’re stuck in the middle of the road Can’t pick a side with that blindfold That’s good to know I’ve been thinkin’ I’m not the girl for you I’ll let that sink in cuz you don’t have a clue I don’t play that game of is it her or is it me I think it’s time to leave Cuz I got some big intentions I ain’t gonna live by convention And that I know I don’t care about the yellow line I’m gonna cross it every time So you should know Cuz I’ve been thinkin’ I’m not the girl for you I’ll let that sink in cuz you don’t have a clue I won’t play that game of is it her or is it me I think it’s time to leave All the time I’ve known you, you haven’t spent a dime You’re just wasting all my time While you keep contemplating I’m heading for the first gas station I’m gonna go And as I hit the road Leaving you standing with that blindfold I want you to know I’ve been thinking I’m not the girl for you I’ll let that sink in cuz you don’t have a clue I won’t play that game of is it her or is it me I think it’s time to leave

ONE MORE THING Seems like yesterday The patter of your feet Singin’ that song every night When you couldn’t fall asleep Now your tree has grown and it’s filling the yard And look at you drivin’ my old car As you head down the driveway just like that All I can think about is when you’re comin’ back We always want to say Just one more thing Before you head into everything Who’s that man standin' there All the little things are big things now Oh lord the hand moves way too fast And mine are much older now We always want to say Just one more thing Before you head into everything Now I got grey roots springin’ outta me I’m watchin’ your little ones climb that old tree You’re repeating all the words I used to say And it feels like yesterday We always want to say Just one more thing

Jaded 02:48
JADED Stopped by your old place yesterday Saw your mom in her housecoat We talked about younger days Blacklight posters and macrame coasters We used to laugh about it all Before you were jaded Before you were jaded Your beat up Nova’s still sittin’ in the yard You swore one day we’d drive away in that car Slow Ride and Ramblin' Man Blaring on the radio So many years ago Before you were jaded Before you were jaded Before you were jaded Come back to where you started Big dreams and empty pockets Long before The big man took you down Come back around Before you were jaded Before you were jaded Before you were jaded Come back to where you started Before the big man took you down Before your tired eyes And plastic smile Before the big man took you down Before you were jaded

about

Deb Morrison's solo debut, The North Fork, is a melting-pot of American roots music, stocked with songs that blur the boundaries between alt-country, Americana, and roadhouse rock & roll. It's a genre-bending mix rooted in contemporary moves and classic influences, whipped into shape by a longtime traveler who's used to crossing borders.

The North Fork brings California to vivid life, filtering Morrison's songwriting through a prism of woozy West Coast sunshine, rolling hillsides, and the ghost-town desert landscapes that influenced so much of the album's creation.  She sets the scene with the record's very first line — "Driving I-80 from the Bay to Big Blue" — and fills the remaining songs with the same mix of cinematic storytelling and smoky, sultry delivery that has already earned comparisons to Neko Case.
